Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) for WoRMS sub-registers

Following the example of WoRMS, a number of its Global, Regional and Thematic Species Databases now also have a DOI assigned to them!
In 2016, The WoRMS Steering Committee decided that the WoRMS database should receive a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), identical to the DOIs that are assigned to scientific publications.

Following this action, many editors requested a DOI specifically for the sub-register under their responsibility, which would in its turn support researchers by helping them in finding, identifying and citing these sub-registers.

Over the last year, the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) assigned such DOIs through DataCite, a leading global non-profit organization that provides DOIs for research data. DataCite now stores the associated metadata of WoRMS and 21 of its sub-registers. In the future, DataCite will disseminate this to other initiatives who in their turn will link the registers to all publications citing them.

A DOI is a unique, alphanumeric string to identify content and to provide a persistent link to the location of this content on the web. By assigning a DOI to the different sub-registers of WoRMS, it supports researchers by helping them in finding, identifying and citing them. The other way around, the DOI will help the Steering Committee of WoRMS to keep track of citations of WoRMS sub-registers in peer-reviewed literature. Assigning a DOI to a sub-register of WoRMS also attests that it answers to certain quality standards and contains the necessary information to make it useable by other scientists.

Assigning DOIs to WoRMS-related Species Databases is supported by LifeWatch, the E-Science European Infrastructure for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research. LifeWatch is a distributed virtual laboratory, which is being used for different aspects of biodiversity research. VLIZ is also responsible for building the LifeWatch Taxonomic Backbone, to which WoRMS and its sub-registers are a valuable contribution.
