ICAIS - International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species - hybrid

The International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species, ICAIS 2022, will be held April 18-22, 2022 in Oostende, Belgium. The conference is co-hosted by the Netherland’s Office for Risk Assessment & Research (NVWA/BuRO) and Belgium’s Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO), with the support of Canada’s Invasive Species Centre, the ICAIS Secretariat.

ICAIS 2022 will be a hybrid event with in-person aspects held at the Thermae Palace Hotel, Oostende, Belgium and virtual aspects live online through an integration platform.

IPHAB Task Team Workshop

Workshop of the IPHAB Task Team and the editors of the IOC-UNESCO Taxonomic Reference List of Harmful Micro Algae (http://marinespecies.org/hab/).

The WoRMS Data Management Team was invited to give a presentation about WoRMS, Aphia and LifeWatch, and to give a demonstration how to add and edit information in the HAB portal.

Hybrid meeting with part of the task team meeting in Denmark, and part of the task team joining through Zoom.

Seawatch-B opleiding 'herkennen van gekruide visjes'

Voor de LifeWatch Seawatchers en hun buddies wordt een opleiding “herkennen van gekruide visjes” georganiseerd op donderdag 18 november 2021 (18u-21u).

Seawatch-B is een observatienetwerk dat met behulp van burgerwetenschappers de toestand van de Belgische Noordzee meet. Een initatief dat kadert binnen het LifeWatch project en in de 'goede-zeedoelen' werking van het VLIZ.

2021 OTN Symposium - online

The 9th annual Ocean Tracking Network (OTN) Symposium takes place November 15-16, 2021. The online event features live presentations, panels and workshops.

OTN is a global aquatic research, data management and partnership platform headquartered at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Telemetrie: de whereabouts van vissen

On Thursday, November 4, Duinpanne is hosting a (Dutch) lecture given by our LifeWatch colleague Jan Reubens on fish telemetry.

Introduction of the lecture

Telemetry is a technology that uses electronic tags and  a receiver network to study the distribution and migration of fish. It helps scientists clarify unanswered questions about fish migration. The VLIZ and the Institute for Nature and Forest Research (INBO) manage about 170 receiving stations in the Belgian part of the North Sea and the Western Scheldt.

Dag van de Wetenschap - Santé Zee (cancelled)

VLIZ had to cancel all activities of 'Santé Zee'. The uncertain presence of several exhibitors and the continuing poor corona figures forced this.

 

This year you can physically experience the "Dag van de Wetenschap" on Sunday, November 28, 2021 (10h-17h). In this light the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) opens the doors of their Marine Station Oostend and the research vessel Simon Stevin.

TDWG 2021 - online

TDWG 2021 is hosted on the virtual platform, Whova, by the University of Florida Biodiversity Institute with Director Dr. Pam Soltis at the University of Florida, Gainesville, along with the Florida Museum of Natural History and iDigBio. The University of Florida Conference Services group, led by Avery Bender will be managing registration, and our use of the Conference virtual platform.

TDWG 2021 is composed of symposia, workshops, contributed oral and poster presentations, demos, and discussions, as well as keynotes and social events.

7th Bio-Logging Symposium - online

The 7th Bio-Logging Symposium will be held virtually from Honolulu, Hawaii and is organized by the international Bio-Logging society. During the five days of the conference, researchers using animal-borne technologies will e-meet to discuss their results and recent technical and analytical advances.

Our LifeWatch colleague, Jan Reubens, is part of it and presents about "Mooring scientific instruments on the seabed—Design, deployment protocol and performance of a recoverable frame for acoustic receivers".

On the 28th of May at 9:00 – 11:00 an online mini-symposium will be held on the use of passive acoustic monitoring and C-POD’s for harbour porpoises and the integration of marine mammal distribution data with fish abundance data.

Bob Rumes (KBIN), Benoit Berges (WUR) and Elisabeth Debusschere (LifeWatch VLIZ) will be presenting their insights and experience on the topic. There will be time for questions and an open discussion.
