Description
Fish species collected specifically for the aquarium in trade in Cairns and occasionally, observations of rare species, or species observed outside their normal range recorded but not collected since 1990. more

Fish species collected specifically for the aquarium trade. Occasionally, observations of rare species, or species observed outside their normal range will be recorded but not collected for interest purposes only (these species may not be of interest to the aquarium trade). “Northern Barrier Marine Life” located in Cairns has been collecting fish for the aquarium trade since the mid 1990’s (electronic records are only available since May 2006). A number of reefs are visited regularly throughout the year for targeted collections, and records are summarized by Collection Trip. For each Collection Trip, fish species collected at each reef are recorded. Multiple collections from the same reef on the same trip are not recorded. The collection location is given as the centroid for the reef. Fish taxonomists Gerry Allen and Jack Randall are consulted to resolve taxonomic discrepancies. More detailed data is recorded and may be available upon request (see Scientific Contact). Total Distribution Records: 869 Total Number of Taxa: 216 species
