Abstract
A comprehensive account is given of the data on distribution and periodicity of 23 Vaucheria spp in the Dutch estuarine areas. Areas investigated are the Wadden Sea in the north, and the estuarine system of the rivers Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt in the south. 6 groups of spp could be discerned, 2 eulittoral (below MHW), and 1 terrestrial group. Except the terrestrial group, the occurrence of each group appears to be restricted to a certain part of the salinity range. The tidal distribution pattern is compared with that of non-tidal brackish inland areas. Genuine brackish Vaucheriae can be discerned which are differentiated in a polyhalobe and a moeso-oligohalobe group.
