| Abstract |
This first part of a two-part paper describes the facilities and technical procedures used tor the production of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) at Cephalonian Fisheries SA from which in the second part an economic evaluation is made. The land-based facilities consist of 2 000m² of covered buildings containing 1 000m³ of tank space with a maximum seawater supply of 500m3.h-1. In larval rearing the successful use of live food enrichment and replacement diets has reduced the nutritional importance of algal production and made possible a 50% replacement of rotifers by inert diets. Larval rearing in a 250m³ tank is also described. In 1986, 1.4 million juveniles of 1.5g average weight each were produced in the hatchery-nursery facility. In the same year the percentage of fish with swim-bladders increased from 30 to 85%. Marketing of table-sized fish reached just over 50t and is expected to rise significantly in 1987. The ongrowing unit is an intensive system composed of groups of nine to 11 floating cages of which two types are used: a two walkway cage of 125m³ and a tour walkway cage of 300m³ net volume. Fry are ongrown in 125m³ cages trom 1.5 to 30g. On reaching 30g, they are graded and moved to 300m³ cages, where they are ongrown to market size (300g). Sea bream reach market size in a total of 14 to 18 months and sea bass in 18 to 24 months. Juvenile quality has proved to be of major importance and significantly affects mortalities, growth, and conversion rates. |
