Abstract
Results of trials on improving cheap dry diets for penaeids, with the aim of suggesting some solutions on feeding shrimps from both the nutritional and economical point of view, are discussed. Good results were obtained in aquaria with feeding shrimps on white fish and krill meal instead of cephalopod meal. A 0.4% inositol and 1.0% fagostimulant mixture also supported good growth of penaeid shrimp. Another experiment was performed in 20m tanks to test the same diet under three different management conditions. The first group received a dry diet (50%) and 50% fresh food, the second one received only a dry diet and the last group also a dry diet only, but the tank was fertilized. The best results were obtained with the dry diet alone, with regard to growth and easiness of tank maintenance. At the end of the experiment, diet and shrimp samples were collected in every tank and checked for their content of protein, lipids, ash, and fatty acids.
