Abstract
    The natural production and culture of the flat oyster (Ostrea edulis L.) in Galicia (NW Spain) had till recently a great importance in the Spanish shellfish industry. Various biological and ecological factors contributed to its near destruction. Between November 1984 and November 1985 the growth, mortality, and parasitism by Bonamia ostreae in two 15-months-old oyster populations, one from natural settlement and the other one from hatchery systems, were compared. The trials were made in two Galician estuaries, the Ortigueira (northern Galicia) and Arasa (southern Galicia). The culture was suspended on rails as is done in mussel culture. The highest monthly mortality occurred in the summer months, reaching 52% in June. The parasite Bonamia ostreae was present in all the samples. The infestation was the highest at the end of the summer, affecting 33.3 to 43.3% of the oysters. The survival rate in this culture period for both populatians was less than 45%, but it was higher in the oysters from the northern estuary than in those from the hatchery.
