Abstract
At the Belgian coast several climate adaptation plans are in preparation. The recent CcASPAR project launched the idea of a compartmentalized coast. But how will this type of coast be experienced? Does this adaptation strategy provide a boost for the coastal tourism? This thesis seeks an answer on both questions. A historical study of tourism at the Belgian coast highlights the keyvalues of the current experience. A literature study on the lifecycle concept provides an answer to the following questions; Can tourism be planned? Which incentives does the Belgian coast really need? Tourism and recreation in a compartmentalized coast are analysed through research by design (drawings, maps, reference images, ...). This thesis concludes that compartmentalisation makes a differentiated approach to coastal tourism possible. The new tourist product is a mix of old and new elements. This balanced strategy meets the needs of tourism planning and enables the further development of the region.
