| Abstract |
Fish communities of inland and coastal waters react to fishing pressure and environmental stresses by the disappearance of the larger individuals and species and an increasing dominance of smaller fishes. Changes in the water quality and quantity, the timing of discharges and the structure of the environment have had a major modifying effect on population structure, especially in inland and coastal marine waters. Fishing has also changed the composition and state of fish stocks by bad practices, excessive effort and physical damage to the environment. Many usages to enhance productivity such as stocking, introductions or aquaculture are also determinal to the substainability of the resource base. It is concluded that fish stocks and aquatic environments are in a poor state world-wide and that action at national and international level is urgently required to remedy the situation. |
