Abstract
    As scientists have collected data on sea level changes, more and more attention has been focused on non-eustatic effects. The Mediterranean is an excellent example of this (e.g., Pirazzoli, 1987). Two examples of non-eustatic effects revealed in recent tide gage analyses include meteorological/oceanic effects (Goldsmith and Gilboa, 1987) and local neotectonics (Emery et al., 1987). In both examples, these effects largely outweigh, and mask, eustatic effects as revealed in monthly mean sea levels determined from tide gages in the Mediterranean. Moreover, The importance, and even dominance, of the non-eustatic effects involving sea level seasonality, local tectonics, and local sea level cycles in the order of tens of years, is consistent with studies conducted in other areas.
