Abstract
Beach and dune nourishment can be viewed as a dynamic and environmentally responsible method of protecting the coast, which makes use of indigenous material. This contribution discusses beach and dune nourishment in terms of their environmental impact in borrow and fill areas, while also the landscaping requirements associated with replenishment activities are discussed. In a case study some preliminary conclusions of a monitoring programme of a beach nourishment carried out in 1987 at Schouwen in the southwest of the Netherlands are given.
