Abstract
Annual fluctuations in the phytoplankton of the Ría de Arosa, northwest Spain, are related not only to seasonal changes, but also to a periodic upwelling phenomenon. There was a maximum biomass in the spring and a minimum in the summer and winter. The summer minimum corresponded to a period of non-upwelling. In contrast, the winter loW occurred during a period of high nutrient-intrusion, but loW lights levels. In the less productive months, the biomass was higher in the inner part of the estuary while in the most productive months it was higher in the middle part of the ria (stations numbers 7, and 9). Month, depth and place were relevant in the distribution of diversity. Diversity was loW during the most productive months and higher during the poorest. The vertical distribution of diversity Corresponded with the biomass, So it was generally higher in the subsurface.
