Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS)

url: http://www.itis.gov/

The Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) contains authoritative information on plants, animals, fungi, and microbes of North America and the world. ITIS is a partnership of U.S., Canadian, and Mexican agencies; other organizations, and taxonomic specialists. ITIS is also a partner of Species 2000 and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). The ITIS and Species 2000 Catalogue of Life (CoL) partnership also provide the taxonomic backbone to the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL).

The Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) is part of the taxon match web service of the Belgian LifeWatch e-Lab, allowing your species list to be cross-checked with the taxonomic information available in ITIS.

As ITIS is strongly embedded within the Catalogue of Life (CoL) and the Species 2000 consortium – and WoRMS and its Data Management Team have a strong link with CoL – there is a good collaboration between ITIS and WoRMS. A number of taxonomic experts from ITIS are also editors within WoRMS, again assuring a good collaboration and understanding between these two initiatives.
