European Ocean Biodiversity Information System (EurOBIS)

url: https://eurobis.org/

EurOBIS, the European Node of the international Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS), publishes distribution data on marine species, collected within European marine waters or collected by European researchers outside European marine waters.

Within EurOBIS, a close cooperation with the European marine countries and regions has been set up for the identification and capture of marine monitoring and research data. The Biology Project of the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet Biology) is an important partner in this, as they specifically focus on the identification and capture of long-term national monitoring data. A number of automated quality control procedures has been developed, helping in the general assessment of the quality, completeness and fitness for use of a record by the user.

In cooperation with the International OBIS community, procedures for the management and quality control of the captured data have been developed and are updated regularly. These best practice procedures help in streamlining the necessary quality control actions and the data transfer from regional nodes to the international OBIS system.

Link with LifeWatch Species Information Backbone:

EurOBIS plays an important role in the LifeWatch Species Information Backbone as the central storage facility for European marine biogeographic data. The EurOBIS data management team is constantly seeking for datasets that can contribute to EurOBIS and EMODnet Biology, making it possible to get a better idea of the marine biodiversity within Europe.

EurOBIS is accessible through the occurrence web services of the LifeWatch.be e-Lab.
