Abstract
    The freshwater trout farmers in Denmark have more or less doubled their production and halved the load on the outlet to the rivers measured in BOD, phosphorus, nitrogen, and suspended solids since 1975. This achievement is not well known to the public -on the contrary: the fish farmers are widely "known" as heavy polluters of the freshwater environment. In 1989 a very strict environmental legislation was signed by the Danish Minister of the Environment. The legislation consists of a complicated set of rules setting maximums for the load on the outlet compared to the inlet water of each farm as well as technical requirements for the purification systems and -which seems unacceptable- authorizes the counties to give each farm a maximum feed allowance. The struggle has resulted in anger, hopelessness, fighting groups and in some very creative methods of economically viable purification. Tests are being performed to be able to present documentation for the efficiency of the systems. The technical side is there to be solved and when political decisions are based on facts the fish farmers have little to fear.
