Abstract
The authors report on the results of phytoplankton surveys performed in a Tyrrhenian site of Sicily, considering the future implementation of a semi-industrial shellfish farm. A miscellaneous assemblage of algal taxa occurred in the part of the gulf which is sheltered by an artificial reef. Microscopical analyses on hepatopancreas content of mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis L.) cultured in this zone, showed that it was composed of synechoccoid cyanobacteria and nano-sized eukaryotic algae.
