Abstract |
Thalassiosira punctigera is a diatom whose region of origin is unknown. It is believed to have been introduced to Europe around 1978 with the transport of breeding oysters or ballast water. By drifting with the prevailing sea currents, this diatom continued to spread along the European coasts. In 1993, this single-celled alga was observed for the first time in the study area, namely in the Western Scheldt. This brownish-red diatom is strongly branched and grows mainly in sandy and muddy estuaries or bays. The species is resistant to large fluctuations in temperature and salinity. |
