Abstract
Among molluscs collected at Liman Kalesi (Turkey, Levantine Basin) in 1993 and 2002 and kept in collection, the determination of shells attributed to Lioberus agglutinans (Cantraine, 1835) (Mytilidae) was reviewed. Based on recent bibliographic data these specimens are now reassigned to L. ligneus (Reeve, 1858), an alien species that entered the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal. This raises questions on the real identity of the L. agglutinans specimens reported to date in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. The range of both species in the Mediterranean Sea and around Africa to the Red Sea is discussed.
