Abstract
After referring to the various approaches which may be made to obtain estimates of the dispersion of pollutants, some relevant solutions of the diffusion equation are discussed. These include radially symmetrical diffusion from an instantaneous point source, discharge from a continuous source into a mean flow and the effects of interaction between a shearing current and diffusion. A brief indication is given of other processes which affect the dispersion of pollutants.
