| Abstract |
Oceanic new production, driven by nutrient input, gives a measure of primary productivity that can be lost from the system and thus is of interest in understanding global carbon cycles. Consequently remotely sensed data from satellites is being used to drive predictive models of global primary and new production. However, regional differences in productivity response to nutrients may occur and models developed from certain oceanographic areas may not be suitable for other regions. This paper explores this problem using new production estimates, measured as 15N labelled nitrate uptake, from both coastal upwelling areas and the Southern Ocean. Both areas have high nutrient concentrations (especially nitrate) yet show very different values of new production. The models derived from eutrophic coastal upwelling areas appear to break down in the nutrientrich Antarctic. Reasons for the nonconformity of the Antarctic are discussed. |
