OBIS INDEEP training and workshop

The aim of this workshop was to connect the deep-sea biological community to OBIS, with the aim to establish a deep-sea OBIS node and develop a customized deep-sea OBIS data portal. This is in response to the call from the OBIS Steering Group meeting (Feb 2015) to liaise with INDEEP and O'Hara et al (2015) to establish a global deep-sea biodiversity data-sharing platform. LifeWatch Data Analysis Workshop: Towards improved LifeWatch sampling campaigns

During a two-day LifeWatch Data Analysis Workshop in February 2018, 22 experts from the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), the Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (ILVO), Ghent University, the Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO), the Operational Directorate Natural Environment (OD Nature) and Onderzoeksprogramma Milieu-Effecten Sigmaplan (OMES) met in Ostend to compile an overview of the long-term monitoring approaches and strategies, to analyze the LifeWatch sampling campaign results, to evaluate the current sampling strategy and to discuss

European Tracking Network (ETN) Workshop

On 19-20 April, the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) hosted a two-day workshop to address several questions to enable such ETN network to become active and operational. The 2-day workshop in Ostend addressed several questions. Given the nascent state of this network and the current absence of a steering committee, this workshop also served to prepare the way towards creating a more formal network structure.

LifeWatch-WoRMS DiatomBase Editor Workshop

The Diatom experts had their first workshop in Prague – from 20-22 March 2017 – which was organized back-to-back with the 11th Central European Diatom Meeting hosted by the Czech Academy of Science. This LifeWatch-WoRMS sponsored workshop was the official start of DiatomBase, a world register of all marine, non-marine, recent and fossil diatom species.

LifeWatch-WoRMS AnnelidaBase Editor Workshop

This workshop is aimed at the taxonomic editors of AnnelidaBase.

Aims of the workshop:

  • Develop the structure of AnnelidaBase, a new WoRMS interface for all annelids. Discuss design of AnnelidaBase interface and discuss higher classification problems between annelid taxa groups.
  • New/old editor further familiarising with WoRMS, training & updating, with real data entry of new content.
  • Advance the addition of existing Delta keys for annelids to WoRMS/AnnelidaBase.

3rd LifeWatch.be Project Meeting for Belgian LifeWatch partners

On 31 May 2017, another LifeWatch.be project meeting was organized at VLIZ in Ostend. During this meeting, all Belgian LifeWatch partners (VLIZ, INBO, UcL, ULg, RBINS, RMCA, BBPf) discussed the status and progress of the individual LifeWatch.be projects. Also the planned updates of the LifeWatch.be website and the LifeWatch.be Users & Stakeholders Meeting in January 2018 were discussed. The report of this meeting is available upon request.

LifeWatch Data Analysis Workshop: Cetacean passive acoustic sensor network

On October 5th-6th 2017, 14 experts met at the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) in Ostend to explore and analyze the C-POD data generated by the Belgian LifeWatch Cetacean passive acoustic sensor network. The R scripts used during the workshop can be found on GitHub.
