Abstract
Examples of major changes in abundance and in biological parameters of some Norht Sea fish species are discussed, based on time-series observations derived from commercial catch data and research vessel surveys. It is concluded that the ongoing monitoring programs are capable of detecting long-term trends, but they have rarely added significantly to our understanding of the mechanisms behind the changes. There is a strong need for supplementing the extensive long-term monitoring programs by specific and detailed studies, which address testable hypotheses from the existing theory, in order to establish adequate management strategies fro exploited large marine ecosystems.
