Abstract
The high potential of wave energy and the goal of raising renewable energy's share of the European Union's power supply 20 percent by 2020 have accelerated the development of wave energy conversion. Oceans are an enormous source of energy. The overall resource (approximately two terawatts) is of the same order of magnitude as the world's electricity consumption. The high density and the favorable seasonal variation of ocean energy make technologies for wave energy conversion worthwhile to investigate and develop.
