Abstract
The southern hermitcrab Diogenes pugilator (Roux) was very abundant on the Belgian beaches between 1988 and 1995. After the cold winter of 1995-1996 there were only a few recording, restricted to the beaches between Nieuwpoort and the French border. After the second extremely cold winter of 1996-1997 Diogenes seemed to have disappeared completely. There were no records from 1997. But in May 1998 many specimens were discovered living in the surf zone at Oostende. Since then Diogenes pugilator is very abundant again and is florishing as before these two cold winters.
