Abstract
The genesis and the stratigraphical context of the periliacial phenomena and the fossil soils preserved into the Upper Pleistocene dcposits at Maisières-Canal, Harmignies and Rocourt are dlscusscd here; for most of them, it has been possible to reconstitute the type of vegetation and the climatic environment. Two groups of periglacial phenomena were recognized. One, related to a permafrost environment, include ice wedge casts and toundra gleys; the second, due to seasonal frost action or repeated frost and thaw cycles, include frost cracks, cryoturbations and creep or solifluxion mass movements. Fossil soils are either gray brown podzolic soils developed under forest, or hummic steppic soils.
