Abstract
Using the in situ 14C technique, productivity studies were carried out on natural populations of Cladophora glomerata in the northern Baltic proper during the summer. Carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus, as well as pigment analyses were made on material from the same populations. Significant correlations were found between productivity and the chlorpohyll a, carotenoid and nitrogen contents of the algae. These correlations suggest possible means of estimating the productivity in ecological studies. The productivity varied from 2.4-13.7 mg C/g dry wt/hr while the photosynthetic index varied from 0.8-6.0 mg C/mg chlorophyl a/hr. These variations are discussed in terms of gradients in environmental parameters (chiefly inorganic nutrients) across the study area.
