Abstract
The principal steps of the post-traumatic, regeneration of the arms in S. officinalis are described. Three phases can be distinguished: (1) wound healing (migration of blood cells and massive synthesis of collagen), spreading of epithelial cells on the wound, degeneration of the damaged cells and dedifferentiation of the cells lying close to the wound; (2) formation of a blastema with the dedifferentiated cells, activation and mitotic multiplication of its cells and of the epidermis (growth phase); (3) redifferentiation and morphogenesis. These steps are correlated with regenerative processes of the nervous and vascular systems. Chromatophores and iridophores do not originate from dedifferentiated cells formerly of the same type. It is possible to draw a parallel between normal and experimental morphogenesis.
