Abstract
The occurrence and vertical distribution of autotrophic thiosulfate oxidizing bacteria in the sediments of the Dutch Waddensea has been investigated. With the use of a new quantitative method based on a relation between the rate of oxidation of thiosulfate in mineral media and the activity of the inoculated mud, a high activity in the surface layer of a vertical sediment profile could be demonstrated in only one case. In all cases a slight activity of the concerned bacteria in all depths was found, and it was concluded that the bacteria could move to higher depths by active migration.
