Abstract
The first comprehensive survey of the Bryozoa from 25 Italian coastal lagoons and brackish ponds
has been carried out during the last 2 years. Conopeum seurati and Bowerbankia gracilis are dominant in the inner part of lagoons which are subject to freshwater supply, and in other habitats with very low salinity. C. seurati is the most resistant to low salinities. A larger number of species is
present in areas with higher salinities, for example at the mouths of wide lagoons. In these localities
Bugula neritina, B. plumosa, B. stolonifera, Scrupocellaria bertholleti and Cryptosula pallasiana are
variously dominant, depending upon other environmental conditions.
