Description
In this study we aim to reveal the spatial movements of five rheophilic fish species in the weir-regulated Meuse (Dutch: 'Zandmaas'), a 70km impounded and navigated river stretch between Linne and Sambeek in the Netherlands. We tag barbel (Barbus barbus), chub (Squalius cephalus), dace (Leuciscus leuciscus), nase (Chondostroma nasus) and ide (Leuciscus idus) and focus on both longitudinal movements in the main channel and movements between the main channel and tributaries that flow into that main channel. The ultimate goal is to learn more about the behaviour of rheophilic fish in this heavily modified river section and to inform and improve rehabilitation efforts, which include the rehabilitation and reconnection of tributaries.
