Abstract |
This paper investigates the resistance prediction of an inland vessel in confined water based on experimental tests performed in the Towing Tank for Manoeuvres in Confined Water at Flanders Hydraulics and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) computations executed at five different scales in deep water, shallow water and confined water. The measured resistance of a 1/20 scale model towed in different channel sections is used to investigate different extrapolation approaches to consider the effect of co nfinement. The contributions of viscous and pressure components to the resistance, their variation at different scales and the interactions with channel boundaries is investigated using CFD calculations at five different sca les. The accuracy and limitations of different extrapolation methods are discussed for different levels of confinement. This paper is the first part of ongoing research to predict the full‐scale resistance of a ship sailing in confined water using model scale towing tank tests and a limited number of numerical computations. |
