Abstract
In this chapter, we explore some of the technologies and other means by which humans observe and monitor a variety of ocean characteristics and processes and how they relate to human health and well-being. Specifically, we discuss observing and monitoring: (a) the physical environment, (b) the growing problem of plastic waste in the ocean, (c) marine biodiversity, (d) marine fisheries, (e) harmful algal blooms, (f) naturally occurring infectious microbes, and (g) monitoring of marine mammals as indicators of ocean environmental effects on humans. We conclude with a discussion about how data from a broad range of ocean, coastal, community, and health surveillance efforts might be integrated into a comprehensive coastal human health observing system in the not-so-distant future.
