A Taxon-Match tool for AlgaeBase, based on the WoRMS Taxon Match

A taxon-match tool built on AlgaeBase is now available through the LifeWatch eLab, with the same functionalities as the WoRMS taxon-match tool.
A Taxon-Match tool for AlgaeBase, based on the WoRMS Taxon Match
Since 2013, there has been a very close collaboration between AlgaeBase and the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS). Joint efforts have made it possible to include the taxonomic names of marine, freshwater, and terrestrial algae in Aphia - the infrastructure behind WoRMS - so WoRMS can make its overview of all described marine species more complete.

The synchronisation between AlgaeBase and Aphia has gone through many rounds of improvements, and since 2019, the WoRMS Data Management Team has undertaken regular cycles of data harvesting, to make sure the AlgaeBase content is correctly represented in WoRMS. During each harvest cycle, open communication between WoRMS and AlgaeBase has led to improved content for both.

Last summer, a new step in the collaboration was achieved, when AlgaeBase enquired about the possibility of creating a taxon-match tool specifically for AlgaeBase, based on the successful and widely used WoRMS taxon match tool.

Today, we are proud to launch this AlgaeBase Taxon Match (focused on matching species and infraspecies), as part of the LifeWatch eLab infrastructure. This Taxon Match runs directly on AlgaeBase and - within the eLab - can be combined with several other (taxon) matching services. The service is free to use, but accessing the LifeWatch eLab does require an account, which can easily be created. Your account will help you in keeping track of all queries and results you put through the eLab. You can find the AlgaeBase taxon match under the available ‘Taxon Match Services’.
