Adult twaite shad spawning migration in the North Sea and the Scheldt estuary
Contact: Coeck, Johan

Availability: Unrestricted after moratorium period
Data are initially restricted, but the access condition relaxes to academic or unrestricted once a specified period of time after an event (such as collection, publication, completion of QC procedures or project cessation) has elapsed

Description
However, shads are very sensitive fish showing adverse reactions to handling and anesthesia, specifically twaite shad. Therefore, internal implantation of electronic tags, such as acoustic, radio and data storage tags is challenging. Preliminary tests are conducted to assess the impact of external tagging on twaite shad survival in Belgium. Fish were caught in the Zeeschelde, with two mid-water beam trawls from an anchored boat in spring 2015, 2016 and 2017 and 39 shads were tagged in total, with coded acoustic transmitters from Vemco. Beside an evaluation of the taggin technique, the data give valuable insights into the migration behaviour of twaite shad in the Scheldt estuary and in the North Sea directly after downstream migation. The dataset will be extended and analysed further in the coming years. more

Although twaite shad (Alosa fallax Lacépède 1803) declined substantially in many European rivers, its numbers increased since 2007 in the Belgian Zeeschelde. Since twaite shad is of conservation concern (Habitat directive), further knowledge on its migration and reproductive behaviour is needed and acoustic telemetry would be a relevant tool to assess these behaviours.
